Behind the scenes: Silent View x Bibian Blue in Ferropolis.

Most of the time you see the super fantastic results of a professional photoshoot in all the high gloss magazines, but can only guess how much work (and/or Photoshop) is needed to achive the flawless results.

This time it's different! As most of you saw on Facebook, I accompanied my dear friends Silent View (whom I hope to be the next Inez & Vinoodh!) last Sunday to take some behind the scenes pictures and lend a helping hand here and there. Assisting models and the photographer is not exactly creative work but being in such an inspiring atmosphere brings new, great ideas to mind.

Even an outstanding picture needs an outstanding background sometimes. Depending on your ressources you can build your own set, hire a location or use a professional photo studio. Silent View perfers to shoot most of the scenes in some kind of natural environment; be it a forest, cornfield or a cemetery. Another creepy background can be found in abandoned industrial places, which was the concept for this shoot. As you will see later, the clothes of Spanish designer Bibain Blue are very feminine and it was deciced they will work best in front of some huge machines. Parts of the dresses appear mechanical to me, too.

The perfect location was found in Eastern Germany in terms of a place called 'Ferropolis', which translates to 'city of steel'.

The former brown coal mining region is nowadays a well-known outdoor museum. In 1995 Ferropolis was founded and ten years later the place was integrated in the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The unusual setting is a popular venue for magnificent open-air concerts and music festivals such as 'Melt!'.

This breathtaking scenery had a hard time competing with the fashion of Bibian Blue. I see a lot of Alexander McQueen and Iris van Herpen influences in her designs and was very anxious to see the clothes in real life. To my satisfaction they didn't disappoint. Every look had so much going on. It was pure pleasure to examine all the details. Bibian's corsets are all handmade and if you see the extensive embellishment you know why.

Initially trained a graphic designer and make-up artist, Bibian Blue studied fashion at the Barcelona International Acedemy of Fashion. She presented her first collection in 2000 and opened her retail showroom one year later in Barcelona. During her career Bibian has dressed several Spanish celebrities, and her work has been featured in numerous magazines. The multi-talented woman shows her newest collection regularly at Valencia Fashion Week.

What I loved about Bibian was that she had a very strong and clear vision of what her clothes should look like in the pictures. She even has so much commitment to change a model's hair completely after one hour of preparation because she wasn't 100% satisfied with the styling.

Three wonderful models were booked for the shoot. Each one of them brought their own special look and character to the set. Anna had the beauty of an ancient painting, Steffi struck everyone with her different coloured eyes and Séraphine charmed me with her doll like face and elegant gestures.

The production was once again proof that modelling isn't just glamorous fun. Besides sitting through hours of make-up and hairstyling sessions, wearing clothes almost unable to breath in and shoes so high almost unable to walk or even stand in, the girls had to fight the outer temperatures. It was reported that this Sunday was the hottest day of the year so far. Looking elegant and prevent make-up from coming off at 36°C and more was quiet a challenge. Even I had my problems with the heat at the end of the day.

Once ready for the camera I fell in love with every outfit. While Steffi was drowning in a sea of safety pins and Anna was channelling her inner warrior goddess, Séraphine's apearance struck as some deadly hybrid between alien and human. You definitely need a strong personality to pull those looks off and not let the pieces wear you instead. I can already see celebrities like Rihanna or Katy Perry floating down the red carpet in Bibian's creations.

All dresses shown here are from the A/W collection 2012/13 called 'Eleven:eleven'.
